About Educational Counselling
Admission Requirements
Because of its unique focus on professional practice, the Educational
Counselling concentration in the Faculty of Education has admission
requirements that are distinct from those of other M.Ed. concentrations
in the faculty.
In addition to the regular admission requirements into graduate
programs within the Educational Studies Section of the Faculty of
Education, applicants must possess a background in the social sciences,
and psychology in particular. Social sciences include, among other
fields, psychology, sociology, and criminology for example. Here
are the basic requirements:
-
An Honours B.Ed. degree or equivalent (e.g., a general baccalaureate
and a teaching certificate with at least one year of teacher
education). Those students who hold a university degree but
who do not have an honours B.Ed. or the equivalent may still
be admitted, however, they will be required to take an extended
program consisting of up to three additional courses.
-
Only students with a B grade or higher will be considered for
admission.
-
Minimum of 5 courses (15 credits) in Social Sciences
*A minimum of 3 out of these 5 courses (9 credits)
must be in Psychology
* Only 2nd year or higher courses will be accepted as Psychology
courses
* One of these psychology courses (3 credits) must be in Theories
of Personality
-
Students must provide a statement of intent (statement of
purpose) as outlined in the admissions package.
-
Students must provide two letters of recommendation.
In general, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate:
-
Successful related work experience
-
Personal suitability (as judged from references and from the
applicant's statement of intent)
-
Superior grade point average
Please note that admission into Educational Counselling is on a
competitive basis: meeting all these requirements does not guarantee
admission to the program.
